EDF Energy
Who we are…
EDF Energy
EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy companies and a wholly-owned subsidiary of the EDF Group, one of Europe’s largest energy groups. We generate around six per cent of the UK’s electricity and employ more than 13,000 people.
EDF Energy Networks
If you live in London, the East of England or the South East of England you are probably one of the 7.8 million customers that we distribute electricity to. We own and operate the electrical system outside your home, for example, the cables in or under the street. We also connect direct to the main fuse and meter in your home. Our networks are vast. They would stretch several times around the circumference of the planet. Altogether, there are 170,000 kilometres of underground cables and overhead lines and 66,300 substations.
What we do
The electricity industry was privatised in 1991. Two of the aims of privatisation were to reduce the price of energy to customers while simultaneously driving up standards. This was achieved by opening up the energy supply side of the market to full competition, while regulating the distribution businesses.
EDF Energy Networks is a distribution company. Our role is very different to that of an energy supplier.
Distribution Companies
Distribution companies, such as EDF Energy Networks, operate and maintain the electrical supply system in particular areas.
Regardless of who your supplier is, it is our network that gets the power to you. There is no alternative. You can look at the maps in ‘Where we work’ to see if we distribute energy to you, or alternatively look at the top of your bill.
Supply Companies
Energy Supply companies buy electricity in bulk from generation companies.
They pay distribution companies, such as EDF Energy Networks, to transport the electricity through the wires to your home or business.
There are approximately 20 energy supply companies who can sell electricity (and gas) to anybody anywhere in the UK. This means you can choose which energy supplier you buy from, regardless of where you live.
Diversity within EDF Energy Networks
EDF Energy Networks is fully committed to a policy of fair and equal treatment of all employees and job applicants, irrespective of their age, colour, disability, ethnic origin, gender, gender reassignment, marital status, nationality, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation or on the basis of part-time working.
As such, we are dedicated to integrating and championing equality and diversity into our business practices. We are taking steps to encourage a workforce which represents the diversity of our customer base and the communities we serve, while also developing a culture based on meritocracy. Working in partnership with agencies such as Race for Opportunity, Employers Forum on Disability and Opportunity Now, we are developing strategies to ensure that EDF Energy Networks uses the wide range of skills that a diverse workforce can offer.
EDF Energy Networks branch employs many types of staff including technically qualified electrical engineering roles. We have a number of job opportunities for electrically qualified staff. For more information please email: [email protected]
